Mother:

Each birth is a very unique experience for each mother and child. For some is happens quickly, for others it can take days. Regardless of the details, during birth the nervous system is very active to coordinate the contractions of the uterus. Mechanically the whole pelvis has to expand to allow the passage of the baby. In case of a caesarean section, the body undergoes a major abdominal surgery.

Osteopathic treatment is very beneficial especially within the first two weeks post-partum both for the Mother and the baby. Ideally the treatment is given to both on the same day, as both have gone through the experience together. The cranial technique can help calm the sympathetic nervous system, which can improve sleep, relax the pelvis, normalise the pregnancy posture, help the letdown of milk and might help the mother feel emotionally calmer.

Child:

The cranial rhythmic impulse is a fundamental subconscious rhythm that is paramount for health. For babies it is particularly important to help them thrive, grow and develop. The birthing process can have a significant effect on the baby’s nervous system through the pressure applied to the head as it comes through the birth canal. The fright and flight response can be triggered in the baby, which can lead to a lot of crying, poor sleep and/or poor digestion. An assisted birth (C-section, forceps, suction or breech) can also trigger an increased activity in the nervous system. Ideally every child and mother can benefit from being treated osteopathically at least once after giving birth.

In my 30 years of being in practise I have accompanied many families through their pregnancies, births and thriving of their children. It has given me immense pleasure to witness these children grow into more of their full potential.
